In the land of Coloane
Quemchi, which in the Huilliche language means "understood people" or "reddish earth", was founded on August 4, 1881 by Don Edwing Langdon. It has a population of 8,689 inhabitants (2002 census).

GIAHS FAO SITE: Chiloé is recognized as GIAHS by FAO in 2011
(with native potatoes, garlic, strawberries, heritage churches, lambs and horses).
On January 19, 2010, the Government of Chile, through the Ministry of Agriculture, signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, for the implementation of the Conservation and Adaptive Management of Systems Project. Important World Agricultural Heritage (GIAHS).
The Chiloé Archipelago has been selected and recognized as one of the GIAHS Sites in the world.
